This is a lovely fiddle with a sweet and resonant sound. The fiddle is a slightly smaller model, so it is very easy and comfortable to play. The highlight of this instrument is its charming tone and beautiful, hand-drawn decorations that are characteristic of Øen's work.

Apart from minor cracks which have been expertly repaired, the fiddle is in excellent condition for its age. This fiddle has been inspected, repaired and made ready to play by respected Norwegian fiddle maker, Ottar Kåsa.

The fiddle new Rudi Fanitullen top and understrings, and a new Hardingen E-string. A chinrest is included.

Bjarne Øen, born in 1914, was a fiddle maker and musician. He grew up in Krødsherad but moved to Bø in Telemark in 1944 where he spent the rest of his life. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he earned his livelihood principally by building Hardanger fiddles. He enjoyed the reputation of being one of the best fiddle makers of the 20th century and received multiple awards at the Landskappleiken (the National Folk Music Championship) for his fiddles. The DNB Sparebankstiftelsen currently has one of his fiddles in their prestigious Dextra Musica instrument collection. Øen was a skilled fiddler himself and actively participated in the Bøheringen fiddler's group.
