Torleiv Frøysaa was born in Hornnes in Aust-Ager is 1867. T. Frøysaa is a maker whose fiddles continue to be treasured and collected to this day. Frøysaa's fiddles are sometimes referred to as 'Little Røstads' as his better examples approach the style and tonal qualities of this great master.

Frøysaa came from a musical family with roots in Iveland and many members of his family also played fiddle. He traveled far and wide to learn from the foremost fiddlers of his day including Torkjell Haugerud, Gunnulv Borgen, Arne Bjørndal Haldor Meland and Sjur Helgeland. When not being fiddles or teaching (his main career), he took part in folk music competitions and received good results.

Frøysaa's chosen career was that of an educator, and after completing his educated, he moved to Gjøvik to practice his profession. Around the turn of the century, when he was well into his 30s, he became interested in fiddle making. His first formal training in fiddle making was with A.C. Kleve in Christiania (Oslo). Some time later, he studied with Gunnar Røstad who is considered to be his main teacher and influence. Frøysaa produced exclusively hardanger fiddles. While he likely produced well over 100 fiddles during his career, the exact number is unknown nor is it known exactly how many fiddles survive to this day. One of his fiddles was awarded a silver medal at an instrument making competition that took place in 1921 in Gjøvik.

In terms of style, Frøysaa's fiddles show characteristics of the Christiania tradition. His work bears the imprint of his mentors, even though his technical prowess didn't always reach to their heights. Nevertheless, Frøysaa made many excellent instrument which are still treasured and sought after to this day.

Frøysaa ended his teaching career in 1927 and moved back to his home village of Horness. He lived to be 82 years old and passed away in 1949.
