This is a fine example of E.M. Penzel's work. The bow creates a precise, bright and focused sound - excellent in combination with fiddles that are on the darker side. In terms of playability, the bow is responsive and lively but still offers the player a sense of control and dependability. This is a nice, light bow that is great for Hardanger fiddle playing.

The stick is round and made of red-brown pernambuco, and has an ebony frog with Parisian eye and silver fittings. The bow weighs approximately 58 grams.

The bow is stamped with Penzel's signature between two treble clefs.

Other than an invisible crack in the frog that has expertly repaired, the bow is in very good condition especially considering its age.

Emil Max Penzel (1887-1953) was a German master violin bow maker. Born in Vogtland, Germany, he trained with the renowned German bow maker, H.R. Pfretzschner, and established his independent atelier in Erlbach/Vogtland in 1908 where he worked until his death. His bows were initially influenced by French maker Lamy but soon evolved into unique designs. He then created the "E.M. Penzel" stamp, framed between two horizontal treble clefs, that became synonymous with the quality and authenticity of his work. His descendants have a workshop in Baden-Württemberg where they maintain the family's tradition of bow making to this day.
