Fiddle labeled "Felemaker Dyre Vaa, Ytre Vinje. Arb.nr. 277". Year unknown - circa 1980s.

The fiddle shows some signs of age on the fingerboard, but this is only cosmetic and does not affect its playability. Apart from that, the fiddle is in good playing condition. It has been inspected, repaired and made ready to play by respected Norwegian fiddle maker, Ottar Kåsa.

The fiddle has been fitted with new Rudi Fanitullen top and understrings, and a new Hardingen E-string.

Dyre Vaa was born in Rauland in 1909 but lived most of his life in Åmot in Ytre Vinje, where he passed away in 1991. He was interested in folk music from a young age and studied with a number of prominent fiddle players, but he soon realized that his strengths lay elsewhere. Vaa was known locally as a Renaissance man who was highly skilled in many areas and he even owned a number of patents for his inventions. He built his first fiddle in 1928 but didn't pursue the craft seriously until 1960. Vaa used Guarneri model violins as the inspiration for his fiddles and he sources good quality timber from Germany to built his fiddles with. He decided to buck the trend of adding five understrings to his fiddles saying that four understrings were enough. A highly intelligent and hard-working man, he was one of the most prolific makers of Hardanger fiddles in the 20th century, with his total reaching over 450 fiddles at the end of his career.
